Rome. The paintings of an Empire
The exhibition spans the history of painting in the Roman Empire from the first-century BC to the fifth-century AD.From sceneographic decoration to popular painting; from portraits to mythology interpreted according to roman tradition, the exhibition covers the development of still life painting. On show are all the themes of ancient painting whether they be grand frescos, refined portraits on wood, decorations, friezes or scenes of great vitality, which have been recovered from both patriarchal domus and the humble homes and workshops of the plebs. Approximately 100 works of exceptional elegance and sophistication have been organised into five different sections to thus reconstruct the complexity of a figurative school from which the geniuses of modern painting derive, beginning with, to cite just one, Raphael.
